The smell of grandma’s gumbo wafting through the house can take you back to being 10 years old. The taste of mom’s mac and cheese can conjure up emotions and memories of a childhood full of love and family. A great meal with a close friend can instantly transport you to shared moments in your lives. I have always been fascinated with this question; why is grandma’s food impossible to recreate? I used to think as a child she must have magic in her hands and no matter how many times I tried to make one of her dishes, it was never quite like grandmas. Through the years I realized it was not magic but love for their families that imparted soul in each and every dish. I watched as they used perfectly fresh ingredients that were simply seasoned and they never rushed. These were the things that made grandma’s food taste the way it did. Fresh, simple, delicious and full of love.
